Old St Petersburg Stock Exchange Given to Hermitage

The city of Saint Petersburg handed the keys of the Old Stock Exchange building, known as The Bourse, on Vasilievsky Island to The Hermitage Museum.

Mikhail Pyotrovsky, director of the Hermitage Museum, has confirmed that the museum will open an exhibit of state symbolism and awards in the building within the next two years.

It will present the history of the Russian state heralds and an exhibition of the flags and state awards that are currently located at the Headquarters of the General Staff on Palace Square.

It is also expected that the building will house exhibits from the Naval Museum, which used to be housed in this very building from 1939 to 2003.

It dates from the early 19th century and originally provided an exchange for visiting merchants.

After the trading port was transferred from the Spit of Vasilievsky Island to a different location at the beginning of the 20th century, the building held different industrial exhibitions before becoming the Naval Museum in 1939
